Hurray! Although it's only been three months since the market closed for the season, it's been a very long three months. I, for one, am positively giddy about opening day, which is just around the corner, Saturday, April 5th!
While we have been trying to keep warm and drive away the winter doldrums, the market folks have been busy planning for the coming season. Interested crafters participated in a jury early in the year in hopes of being selected to fill one of the few available spots. Farmers have been pouring over seed catalogues and deciding which crops to plant this season. And the market staff and board have been brainstorming ways to improve the market experience for patrons.
One new feature this year will be the addition of a "Veggie Check" booth. Manned mostly with volunteers, this booth will be a great resource for customers looking for advice on how to pick produce, keep tabs on what's hot in the market, learn more about sustainable agriculture or simpy find out where to toss their recyclable bottles. But even more exciting is that the "Veggie Check" booth will also have small shopping carts available for check-out. The hope is that customers will find it easier and less cumbersome to load up on many of their grocery needs at the market, especially since the market will boast not only a plethara of farmed produce, but also local milk and cheeses, organically raised beef, poultry and eggs, yummy baked goods, and fresh flowers. Practically everything you would need to throw a last-minute dinner party will be available in one, convenient location.
How will this work, you ask? Simple. For a $5 depost, easy-to-manuever shopping carts can be checked-out. Once you're done shopping, return the cart to the "Veggie Check" booth where you will receive $4 back ($1 stays with the market to help them keep this booth up and running). The best part is that the booth will be located close to street access so you can leave your purchases there and return with your car to load up all your goodies! What a deal!!
The "Veggie Check" booth is just one of the new, exciting features of the market. Make sure to mark your calendars and stop by on opening day to get caught up in all that's fresh, local and lively! Oh yeah... and keep your fingers crossed for sunshine!
